When I saw that Julia had a new book coming out – It's Never Too Late To Begin Again, and that I could read it through Net Galley in exchange for a fair book review I completely jumped at the chance. Admittedly, when I began reading it and discovered that Julia primarily wrote it for newly retired people I nearly balked at reading it. Just then I remembered that The Artist's Way was not written purely for artists, either, then I connected on. The book is written to help individuals realize that information technology is never too belatedly to brainstorm life again. Some of us are considering out place in life, contemplating a change in our life style or career, and some of u.s. are in an in-between phase of life; some people are just beginning retirement and are uncertain what life volition bring next. Regardless of where we are, I believe this book can help us discover our next desire or form of action.
I have not finished the book, and I really don't desire to. It is one of those books that I am only delighting in reading and I truly do non want information technology to end and be over. I've skipped alee, skipped dorsum, re-read the inspirational quotes, flipped forrard once more – I go along reading back and forth, just I am not ready to be finished with it. A few years ago in my first job as a school librarian I worked for a private school. We held our twice annual book fairs at the local Barnes & Noble, and that suited me fine; I worked at that particular store role-time, and book off-white weeks were a lot of work, but fun, also; being a bookseller and schoolhouse librarian during that stage of my life were probably some of the most fulfilling days of my career. Parents were so beholden of my knowledge and honesty, and steering the children toward "just-right" books was such a pleasure and and then satisfying. At the aforementioned time, in betwixt visits from the kids (they rode on the motorbus as a field trip to the store and often parents would see them there), the parents would wander the store and I could talk books to as many equally wanted to. One particular mom had been fighting cancer over that by year. She had 2 daughters; one was on the verge of "graduating" eighth grade; the other had graduated the year prior. In our chat at the store she spoke frankly of her illness and her fears of dying from her illness. I don't know how the conversation drifted, but nosotros began speaking of the afterlife. And from that I told her of a book I had read on the subject which captivated me – Many Lives, Many Masters by Brian Weiss. She ended up purchasing information technology, and a few weeks later she called me and left me a phonation mail. When I first heard her voice, my heart beat out incredibly fast and lodged in my throat. She said, Kim, I only desire you lot to know I take non finished the book, and I practice not desire to. I thought – oh, no! Then she went on in a rush of laughter – she loved it, idea it was fabled and did not want it to end, which is why she was not going to finish it.
That is how I feel about Julia Cameron's newest book. I don't want it to end. It is non a volume designed to be read in i sitting. Information technology is intentionally gear up to be spread out over a twelve calendar week catamenia. There are tasks involved – Morning Pages, Walking, creating a Memoir, an Artist Walk. Each are activities designed for soul searching; for rediscovering ones passions – or even finding them for the first fourth dimension. I am very new to Julia Cameron and her books, but I am truly enthralled with her writing and her suggestions. I await forward to continuing with this book and never really finishing information technology. Julia – thank you so much for your gifts to your readers.

I really tin't recommend this volume enough, particularly for people who have been struggling with their creativity levels. Honestly, it is never likewise tardily to brainstorm anything, regardless of what other individuals around yous might be telling you or advising you lot. I specially liked the warm writing style of Julia Cameron's and the style she achieved some kind of closeness to the reader (and me included!) even though I had not read anything by her prior to having come beyond this book. *review posted on Goodreads, NetGalley and Amazon ...more

A lot of fluff in this 1 of countless product line extensions from "The Artist'south Way". The title is a lie, but I suppose it wouldn't accept sold many copies if it was called "It'due south Normally Not Likewise Late to Brainstorm Again." Her clients, cited as examples, seem like incredibly dull white bread WASPs, and their stories are deeply snoozeworthy. Can a retired accountant notice creativity and meaning in learning deviant sexual expression through floral design? Yous tell me.For all of that, I honey the Forenoon Pages she suggests, and will keep writing them. The template for a memoir is also really useful if you desire to write one.

At that place'southward a spiritual and/or religious bent to some of the book, but (every bit a non-religious person) I did non find it overwhelming or abrasive. Cameron acknowledges spirituality apart from religion, and spirituality is not the focus of the book. It'due south more than of a tool in a toolbox that she presents.
"Morn Pages" are the first tool that Cameron teaches us. She tells us to write three pages every morning time, past hand (no reckoner), stream-of-consciousness style. She provides many anecdotes showing the states how people accept learned surprising things most themselves (and their relationships, jobs, etc.) through this exercise. I'grand a fan of freewriting in general, and although I usually come across writing teachers abet it in smaller amounts, I can encounter how forcing yourself to fill all three pages would probably bring a lot more to the surface.
Her second tool is memoir. You divide your age past the 12 weeks the course is meant to terminal, and write nigh that many years each week, starting from the outset. Again, it's meant to bring things to the surface, brand connections you might not have come up with otherwise, etc. For some people the memoir becomes a purpose and project unto itself.
Weekly 'creative person dates' are meant as a refueling method. Choose something a lilliputian interesting, special, or deliberately out of your condolement zone, and become do it lone. Go to an aquarium or zoo. Savor a trip through an art gallery or museum. It's meant to jolt us out of our inertia and boredom; she calls it 'assigned play'.
Then there'south something particularly easy: walking (twice a week, for at least xx minutes at a fourth dimension).
Each week in the book comes with questions to enquire yourself, plenty of examples from her students, and tips to go around things that may exist blocking you. Cameron presents ways to deal with distractions, drama, and 'crazymaking' people.
I like the book well plenty that I bought a re-create for a recently-retired person I care about. Sure, it has that 'new age' feel to it, just I recall that works well in this case, and in my opinion doesn't alter whether or non it will work for yous. This is about finding and fulfilling your dreams and goals, one small pace at a time.

We baby boomers are reaching retirement age in droves. Some might say, "Now what?"Cameron has written this insightful volume specifically for those in such a transition. I really similar this volume. Cameron has arranged it as a twelve week form. It is perfect for thinking through past dreams or aspirations and seeing if those ideas may be brought back to life. I love how she addresses the conscience we all accept. ("You're likewise old." "You don't know how.") She helps the states constitute a new routine and new relationships. We are asked to exercise some honest reflection on our life. She helps us deal with perfectionism and cocky-doubt. She has suggestions as to how nosotros tin can bring joy and humor into our life. She even helps those of us who are experiencing hurting, helping us redirect that pain to skillful free energy. Cameron has included many inspiring stories, encouraging us to realize that at that place is a whole new and heady life to alive as we reach our senior years.
This volume is a tool to modify your life. Perhaps there is a lost passion or hobby you want to revisit. Peradventure you regret the career choice you made. "Information technology's never too late to be a beginner," Cameron writes. There are new classes to take, skills to learn, sights to meet. Referring to Robert Frost's two roads that diverged, Cameron writes, "The beauty of retirement is that information technology provides us with the opportunity to travel back in fourth dimension and explore the paths we didn't take."
I highly recommend this book. If you're similar me, yous'll discover many ideas for filling up your retirement days.

I absolutely loved this book and all the great examples that were used to help illustrate Julia's messages. I am in my 40'southward and in the process of completely changing careers. This volume is a stride by step, 12 week process aimed at contempo retirees to reconnect with their creativity and find their passion. It is designed to aid the transitioning from traditional employment to what comes afterward. That is, if you are financially solvent enough to retire in the kickoff place. There is a lot of repetition from chapter to chapter which some may detect annoying.
Each chapter is its ain separate calendar week which includes Cameron's foundational tool called 'Morning Pages', a stream of consciousness number of daily pages to be performed showtime thing and merely for the author's eyes. Other bones tools employed are Memoirs, a listing of guided questions to trigger past memories for the sake of unearthing creative interests, Artist Dates, which is a solo outing to explore passions and walking, a common excursion done solo without friends, phones or pets to initiate useful idea and process information.
All the in a higher place tools are expert ones and are laid out in an easy-to-follow format which if done with commitment should yield some pretty impressive results. Equally with anything, if her techniques are not constantly being practiced, it's all pretty forgettable. This book is meant to act mainly as a workbook though Cameron does offer plenty of stories from those she has worked with equally well as her ain. They are meant to be examples of common obstacles and inspiration. I did not embark on this as a project just rather something read to find some new ideas. Honestly, the volume is eerily similar to those trendy miracle morning routines that some millennials mapped out for themselves and tried to cram downward everyone else's throats. Each one of us needs to find their own way of growing creativity inside themselves. However, someone else's template can be a great starting point.
With 42 million contingent workers in the United States, including freelancers, contractors, and temps, this volume feels outdated. Cameron only mentions those mostly mid-to-older Boomer-historic period men and women who worked in the about traditional chore market. Those younger can still discover benefit if they cull to read this volume but I doubt that many would even come up across it, let solitary bother to pick it upwardly. From what I hear, her book The Creative person's Fashion might be a meliorate fit for a younger person. Cameron seems to miss the fact that many Boomers are financially unable to retire. They demand to keep on working or looking for other streams of income subsequently her traditional definition of retirement kicks in. The gallery wandering and hot cocoa drinking dates she proposes are important to take time out for but she misses the realities of virtually people'due south lives.
If you are so inclined to read information technology, at that place are some good takeaways. If you are a Boomer and take retired recently, this might be a good project. I did detect the underlying theme regarding the way aging in our society is viewed rather depressing.

- the GOD talk - however, later in the book Cameron had this really great exercise ("God Concept") where she asks the reader to describe the GOD that he/she grew up with and to then draw the GOD that he or she would design - I found this very cathartic - when she broadened the definition of what GOD/Faith/SPIRITUALITY mean, it put me more at ease with these sections of the book
- the WHITE and PRIVILEGED feeling in the book - she uses no examples that might brand a person of color feel welcome in these pages - and she assumes that everyone gets the privilege of retiring - she as well mentions her very idyllic upbringing several times, ane that included her own pony (actually? how many people can relate to that?) - in this regard, she could done a lot more to make the volume feel inclusive - on the other hand, it was the anecdotal evidence that she provided hither is what drew me into the book, stories of existent people that demonstrated the points that she was making
Subsequently I got past all of that, I found a lot that I personally could relate to at this time in my life. I enjoyed the exercises (I scratched my thoughts right into the margins of the book and treated it like a workbook). While I love the concepts of Morning Pages, twice weekly solitary walks, the memoir, and Artist Dates, I think that she expects way too much of the reader in terms of the fourth dimension that this 12 week course requires. The members of my book study group all did what we could with the time that we had. I tried all of her suggestions and constitute them useful, even if I couldn't do them the number of times that she suggested.
I ordered "The Artist's Way" as a result of reading this volume. I will read information technology slowly, as I did this book. Hopefully, it will inspire me to get at all of those arts and crafts projects that I have swimming around in my head!

Cameron's book - which I read direct through but is meant to exist read in 12 weeks - is a twelve week "course", of sorts, for newly retired people to help them ease into retirement life. But really, as I read it, I think this volume is also great for people like me - unemployed and can't observe a job so feeling at loose ends - or people in their 40's (midlife so to speak) who are feeling unsettled, discontent, unsure nigh the career they are in and if perhaps there isn't a change out there waiting for them. Or for people who are looking for a 2nd career just aren't quite sure what.
Cameron proposes a "tool kit" to help people figure out what they want to exercise in this second life. Morning Pages, Artist Dates, Daily Walks, Memoir Writing, and some piece of cake Tasks. Each calendar week focuses on reigniting a unlike area, such as: wonder, purpose, humility, motility, adventure, and more. Each week Cameron had valuable insights that as a not-retired person I establish inspiring and helpful. In fact, I'm going to reread the volume again but this time according the the 12 week class and come across what happens every bit I navigate this unexpected time of life.
